Capture your Salmon Festival experience in the same manner that Japanese fishermen once recorded their daily catch, by making a fish rubbing (gyo= fish, taku= rubbing). Join Chelan PUD biologists and educators and create your own colorful fish print.
From the banks of the creek, in its calmer reaches, participants don rubber boots and explore the parameters of healthy fish habitat. With a fisheries biologist, you will determine where fish like to live, what they prefer to eat, and what insects are indicator species.
In this 40 by 40 foot barrier-free maze, you become a salmon and experience the many challenges of aquatic life and migration. You will meet predators and learn about survival as you recreate the salmon's amazing life cycle.
In this big, colorful nylon inflatable salmon shaped tent, listeners will learn the Native American stories that convey the importance of salmon, wildlife, and rivers to their culture. Professional storytellers share these wonderful legends.
Get the inside scoop as you take a guided Hatchery Tour. You will have an opportunity to learn about the salmon's life cycle, see live salmon eggs, discover how rearing fish at a hatchery really works, and watch yearling salmon eat lunch.
Beautiful flowers, native plant species, composting, and other horticultural practices are shared by students from the Cascade Discovery Program.
Many agencies and organizations in our community share information and bring their displays, including "hands on" interactive activities.
Follow the scent of roasting salmon to the inter-tribal encampment and you will have an opportunity to observe authentic Native American traditions in action, including beading, drumming, dancing, and the preparation of salmon using time-honored methods of baking and drying.
Children and parents are invited to dress in colorful costumes of birds, insects, wolves, and other creatures. Fly, hop, crawl, swim or walk in a short parade down Chinook Avenue.
Make your own "fishy" art, a decorative button, or explore your talent with paint, glue and sparkles! The possibilities are endless at the art tent.
Search for the answers to fun fact questions- and win a prize! Visit various locations throughout the festival grounds, turn in your answers and see what your prize is! A fun way to learn about salmon and the environment!
Always a favorite with festival visitors. Make your way through the miniature "migratory" golf course and learn about the obstacles the salmon face on their journey every year!
Why save endangered species? What makes these animals and plants so special that money and effort should be spent to conserve them? Explore what wildlife trade is, how it affects biodiversity, and how people can help control it. (Saturday only)
Learn more about our local freshwater fish species while observing them in our large aquarium. I.D. cards for each fish are provided, and biologists are on hand to answer any questions you may have about our fishy friends!
