Poster Contest and Scholarship

2008 Poster Contest

Each Spring the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival kicks off the year by hosting a poster design contest in local elementary schools. Third grade students from 27schools in north Central Washington submit posters (about 600 total), which are judged on the basis of creativity, artwork, slogan and theme. Poster Contest WinnersThe winning poster is then incorporated into the "o-FISH-al" festival publicity poster, distributed throughout the region the month before the festival.

The poster contest is an opportunity for teachers to meet Washington State Essential Learning (WASL) requirements through integrating art and science. Teachers and festival representatives present information about the salmon life cycle, the role of salmon in the "web of life", and the relationship of humans to the natural environment. The students choose ways of illustrating one of these concepts. Most of the posters submitted are beautifully done and reflect a lot of thought and effort.

The 2008 Poster Contest winners will be announced in May, and the results will be posted here!
