Poster Contest and Scholarship

2009 Nancy Duree
Natural Resource Scholarship

Sponsored by the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival

The Wenatchee River Salmon Festival announces the Nancy Duree Natural Resource Scholarship. Nancy received her education in wildlife management from Humbolt State University. She loved the outdoors and her hobbies included birding and wildflower identification. She was a member of the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival Core Team and was devoted to the educational mission of the festival and an active participant in the Festival since its inception in 1991. During many years of the festival, she coordinated both the gyotaku (fish printing) and the King Size viewing aquarium. Nancy believed strongly in the values of high quality natural resource education for people of all ages.

The $1500 Nancy Duree Natural Resource Scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing higher education in natural resources (i.e. fisheries, forestry, wildlife, botany, geology, soil sciences, watershed sciences, ecology, and environmental education/recreation). The Salmon Festival is also dedicated to providing high quality natural resource education, promoting outdoor recreation, and sharing the cultural significance of the salmon to the people of the Northwest.

Applicants must attend high school in one of the following Washington State counties to compete for the scholarship:

  • Chelan County
  • Douglas County
  • Grant County
  • Kittitas County
  • Okanogan County
  • Yakima County

Students must have attained a minimum accumulative grade point average of 2.5 and been accepted to an accredited two-year or four-year college Or university by the time the scholarship is awarded. The $1500 will be sent directly to the school financial aid office and dispersed as the school requires.

Upper Valley Christian School, Leavenworth

Each Spring the Wenatchee River Salmon Festival kicks off the year by hosting a poster design contest in local elementary schools. Third grade students from 27 schools in north Central Washington submit posters (about 600 total), which are judged on the basis of creativity, artwork, slogan and theme. The winning poster is then incorporated into the "o-FISH-al" festival publicity poster, distributed throughout the region the month before the festival.

The poster contest is an opportunity for teachers to meet Washington State Essential Learning (WASL) requirements through integrating art and science. Teachers and festival representatives present information about the salmon life cycle, the role of salmon in the "web of life", and the relationship of humans to the natural environment. The students choose ways of illustrating one of these concepts. Most of the posters submitted are beautifully done and reflect a lot of thought and effort.

Congratulations, Halla and Kate!
